Why Your UPVC Door Is Sticking, Jamming, or Not Locking Properly

Common Causes of UPVC Door Issues

UPVC doors have been a popular choice for their durability and insulation, but they’re not immune to wear and tear. Here are a few reasons they stop working as they should:

  • Dropped Door: Over time, the weight and use of the door can cause the hinges to sag slightly, which misaligns where the locking points meet the holes in the frame when the handle is lifted. This makes the handle harder to lift and the door more difficult to lock.
  • Worn Gearbox: The central part of the locking mechanism, the gearbox, is often the first part to wear out. When this fails, the handle may spin loosely or feel resistant when you use it.
  • Thermal Expansion & Contraction: Seasonal weather changes can cause the UPVC material to swell or contract, especially in south-facing doors. This puts extra stress on the locking components.
  • Foreign Object: This is the one that surprises most people. Sometimes, something like a stone in the door frame stops the door from closing correctly which then means the door won’t lock.

Why You Shouldn’t Force It

We know how tempting it is to give the door a good shove when it sticks, but this can make things worse. Forcing a UPVC door can:

  • Damage the internal parts of the mechanism
  • Crack or damage the door frame
  • Leave you locked out or in if the mechanism fails

Leaving these issues unresolved often leads to more expensive repairs. What starts as a minor misalignment can lead to full mechanism failure if ignored.

What You Can Do Before Calling a Locksmith

If your door is starting to stick or jam:

  • Check for Objects: Start by checking the bottom of the door frame for anything that doesn’t look like it should be there and looks like it may block the door from shutting fully. DON’T FORGET – Some doors have a weather strip on the front of the door, at the bottom. Just check that it hasn’t moved and it now getting trapped when the door shuts to the frame.
  • Do a Handle Test: While the door is open and not closed into the frame, lift the handle gently and turn the key. If that works, the problem is likely an alignment issue.
  • Try Lubrication: A small amount of PTFE based lubricant, such as GT85 (DON’T USE WD40, this could falsely help initially, but make things worse after a few days or weeks) Lubricating correctly can help ease stiff movement.
  • Inspect for Visible Droop: Look at the spacing around the door. If the gap at the top is larger than at the bottom, it’s likely dropped and needs adjusting.
